State - Level Workshop for Teachers on Experimental Procedures in Chemistry Laboratory

The Department of Chemistry organized State - Level Workshop for Teachers on Experimental Procedures in Chemistry Laboratory on 04.08.2023 and 05.08.20. During day 1, the Inaugural Session started in the Seminar Hall at 09.30 am. A total of 21 teachers from Muhyiddeen Matric Higher Secondary School, Kayalpattinam, L.K. Matric Higher Secondary School Kanchi Sri Sankara Matric Higher Secondary School, Tiruchendur, Kanchi Sri Sankara Vidhyashram, Tiruchendur, Pushpalata Vidya Mandir, Palayamkottai, Pushpalata Matric Higher Secondary School, Palayamkottai Muthamil Public School, CSI Matric Higher Secondary School, Cathedral Higher Secondary School Vannarapettai and Francis Xavier School, Vannarapettai participated in the workshop. Dr. A. Syed Mohamed, Associate Professor & Head of Chemistry explained the theme of the State - Level Workshop for Teachers on Experimental Procedures in Chemistry Laboratory. He emphasized that practical is the key component in the curriculum. The first session is Systematic Analysis of Organic compounds conducted by Dr. I. Antony Danish and Dr. Fathima Shahana. They demonstrated the analysis of functional groups and preparation of derivatives. The teachers actively participated and analyzed different functional groups. The second session is Crystallization demonstrated by Dr. S. B. Mohamed Khalith. During the second day, session three is handled by Dr. M. Sheik Muhideen Badhusha and Dr. P. Anvar Kasim on Inorganic Qualitative Analysis- Salt Analysis. They demonstrated the analysis of cations, anions and removal of interfering anions. Participants actively participated in analyzing the salts. Session four is Inorganic Quantitative Analysis- Volumetric Estimation conducted by Dr. M. A. Sabitha and Dr. S. B. Mohamed Khalith. They explained the different types of titrations and demonstrated the estimation of calcium. The teachers are provided with unknown solutions to perform complexometric titration. Session five is Chromatographic Techniques carried out by Dr. I. Antony Danish and Dr. S. Brillians Revin. They demonstrated the Thin Layer Chromatography and Paper Chromatography respectively. The teachers clarified their doubts. Dr. T. Syed Ismail, Former Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, Sadakathullah Appa College delivered the Valedictory Address. He distributed the Certificates to the participants. Dr. A. Syed Mohamed is the Convener, Dr. M. Sheik Muhideen Badhusha is the Co-convener, Dr. M. A. Sabitha and Dr. M. Fathima Shahana are the Organizing Secretaries for the workshop.

Commemoration Day I for the Birth Day of Great Nobel Laureates Irene Joliot Curie and Akira Suzuki

The Department of Chemistry Association celebrated Commemoration Day for the Birth Day of Great Nobel Laureates Irene Joliot Curie and Akira Suzuki on 12.09.23 at Auditorium. Dr. I. Antony Danish and Dr. S. Brillians Revin addressed the gathering on “Achievements of Akira Suzuki”. Dr. P. Jeslin Kanaga Inba and Dr. P. Anvar Kasim addressed the gathering on “Achievements of Irene Joliot Curie. The faculty members Dr. P. Jeslin Kanaga Inba, Dr. I. Antony Danish, Dr. S. Brillians Revin and Dr. P. Anvar Kasim are honored with shield. Dr. P. Jeslin Kanaga Inba organized the programme. 170 students of UG and PG Chemistry participated in the programme and benefitted.

Model Making Competition-MMC 2023

The Department of Chemistry Association conducted Model Making Competition-MMC 2023 on 25.09.2023 at Auditorium. Dr. K. Swarnalatha, Professor and Head, Department of Chemistry, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli inaugurated the programme. Dr. A. Syed Mohamed is the Convener, Dr. M. Sheik Muhideen Badhusha is the Co-convener and Dr. M. Thameem Ansari is the Organizing Secretary. Dr. K. Swarnalatha and Dr. M. Mohamed Roshan, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Physics, judged the models. 58 students of UG, PG Chemistry and 24 students of UG Physics enthusiastically participated in the programme. The Department of Chemistry Association celebrated Commemoration Day for the Birth Day of Great Nobel Laureates Johann Deisenhofer (30.09.1943) and Jean-Marie Lehn (30.09.1930) on 04.10.23 at Auditorium. Mr. S. Basith Ali and Mr. P. Mohammed Vajith Ali of II M.Sc., Chemistry addressed the gathering on “Achievements of Johann Deisenhofer” and “Achievements of Jean-Marie Lehn” respectively. Dr. P. Jeslin Kanaga Inba organized the programme. The students are honored with shield. 92 students of UG and PG Chemistry participated in the programme and benefitted.

Guest Lecture I on “Sustainable Development for a Clean and Healthy Planet” under the theme of integrated social, economic, and environmental sustainability, including Climate Action (SDG 13)

The Department of Chemistry organized Guest Lecture I on Sustainable Development Goals adopted by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recommendations of University Grants Commission on 23.01.2024 at the Auditorium under the theme ‘Integrated social, economic, and environmental sustainability, including Climate Action (SDG 13)’. The Chief Guest. Mr. M. Robinson, Assistant Professor, Department of Science and Humanities, Francis Xavier Engineering College, Tirunelveli, delivered the Guest Lecture on ‘Sustainable Development for a Clean and Healthy Planet’. Dr. I. Antony Danish organized the programme. 140 students of Department of Chemistry participated in the programme.

Young Student Scientist Programme (YSSP)

The Department of Chemistry organized workshop for school students for Young Student Scientist Programme on 31.01.2024 at the Seminar Hall. Dr. A. Syed Mohamed, Head of Department of Chemistry cheered the students with the topic ‘Alchemy’. Dr. I. Antony Danish explained the history of Chemistry. Atomic Structure I and II were delivered by Dr. M. Sheik Muhideen Badhusa and Dr. M. Thameem Ansari. Dr. A. Syed Mohamed discussed about ‘Quantum numbers’ followed by Dr. S. B. Mohamed Khalith on ‘Hunds rule, Aufbau principle and Pauli’s Exclusion principle. Dr. P. Jeslin Kanaga Inba, Dr. M. A. Sabitha and Dr. M. Fathima Shahana explained the Periodic Table effectively using charts and models. Dr. P. Anvar Kasim explained the concept of ‘Chemical Bonding’. The afternoon experimental session started with Acid-Base titration, chromatography and pH by Dr. S. Brillians Revin and Dr. S. B. Mohamed Khalith followed by ‘Inorganic Qualitative Analysis’ by Dr. P. Anvar Kasim and ‘Fun Experiments’ by I B. Sc., Chemistry students coordinated by Dr. M. Thameem Ansari. Dr. A. Syed Mohamed is the Convener, Dr. M. Sheik Muhideen Badhusha is the Co-convener and Dr. M. Thameem Ansari, Coordinator of YSSP (Chemistry) organized the programme. 68 students from various schools have benefitted from this programme.

Guest Lecture II on “Manufacture of Herbal Soaps using Cold Process”

The Department of Chemistry organized Guest Lecture II on 16.02.2024 in the College Auditorium. Ms. Vairapriya, Proprietor and Manufacturer, Diamond Naturals Entrepreneur, Tirunelveli and Mrs. M. Savitha Muthuraj, Proprietor and Manufacturer, Minmini Herbal Soaps, Kattalai, Nanguneri, Tirunelveli delivered the Guest Lecture and presented demo on ‘Manufacture of Herbal Soaps using Cold Process’. They distributed the soap samples to the students and the faculty members. Dr. A. Syed Mohamed is the Convener, Dr. M. Sheik Muhideen Badhusha is the Co-convener and Dr. M. A. Sabitha is the Organizing Secretary. 52 students of II and III B.Sc., Chemistry and 17 students of II M.Sc., Chemistry participated in the programme.

Chemistry Association Valedictory Function

The Department of Chemistry organized Association Valedictory Function on 25.04.2024 in the College Seminar Hall. Dr. T. S. Gnanendra, Head, Department of Biotechnology, Vivekanandha College of Arts and Sciences for Women (Autonomous), Tiruchengode delivered the Valedictory Address on ‘Empowering Drug Discovery: The Significance of Chemoinformatics in Collaborative Research’. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is signed between Department of Chemistry and Origene Biosolutions. Department of Chemistry felicitated Mr. S. M. Tajudeen, Lab Assistant, on his retirement with 1g gold coin. Dr. M. A. Sabitha organized the programme. 99 students of III, II B.Sc., Chemistry and I, II M.Sc., Chemistry participated in the programme.
